US President Donald Trump threatened on Monday to stop the opening of a new bridge between the US and Canada.

According to Trump, the United States should own at least half of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is still under construction and connects the Canadian province of Ontario with the American state of Michigan.

"I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them (Canada, ed.), and not until, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect that we deserve," Trump wrote in a post on his own social media site, Truth Social.

"We will begin negotiations immediately," it continues.

Work on the bridge, which takes its name from the late Canadian-born National Hockey League legend Gordie Howe, began in 2018.

It costs $4.7 billion - 29.5 billion kroner - and is expected to open later this year.

In his post, Republican Trump also criticizes the fact that, according to him, Canada owns both sides of the bridge and that almost no American materials or services were used in the construction of the bridge.

- And now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney (Mark Carney, ed.) wants to make a deal with China - which will eat Canada alive. We'll just get the leftovers! It won't work, Trump adds.

The US government has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Canada after Carney visited Beijing, China, last month and struck a preliminary trade deal with the country.

In his post, Trump repeats a claim that China plans to stop all ice hockey in Canada and permanently abolish the Stanley Cup, which is the final series in the North American ice hockey league NHL.

Trump has been at odds with Canada, particularly over trade, since his return to the presidency in January 2025. He has also previously called for the United States to annex Canada.

Canada has not immediately responded to Trump's post about the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
