Jens-Frederik Nielsen takes the helm: - It went faster than expected

No one saw it coming. 33-year-old Jens Frederik Nielsen surprised everyone, including himself, when he became the country's youngest chairman of the Greenlandic Parliament. Now he's sitting in the chairman's office and telling us how it all happened in our podcast.

Previously, the trip to Inatsisartut's offices was the way to meet Jens-Frederik Nielsen. But now it is a completely different path to take – to the red building where Naalakkersuisut is located. Here, in a larger office, he now sits as chairman of Naalakkersuisut.

– I have always believed that one day we would get there. I just didn't expect it to happen so quickly, says Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

In the election on March 11th, something happened that no one had predicted. Not even the media had predicted that Demokraatit would end up as the big winner of the election. But during the evening it began to look as if Jens-Frederik Nielsen could become the next chairman of Naalakkersuisut.

– When we saw the numbers from Kitsissuarsuit, I thought, it looks like we can win. That's where I saw the first sign. Then the cities came, and we started to win in the smaller towns. I thought: We can actually become the largest party, he says.

And they did. From just three mandates in the last election period, Demokraatit has grown to ten and has now taken over the role of the country's largest party. A significant shift in Greenlandic politics – at a time when the world's eyes are increasingly focused on Greenland.

Youngest Chairman of the Greenland Parliament

At 33 years old, Jens Frederik Nielsen is now Greenland's youngest ever chairman of the Naalakkersuisut. He has been a clear and prominent voice in the Inatsisartut for several years, but when we met him in his new office, he seemed to be more calm.

However, this is far from meaning that the role as the country's leader will be a quiet period.

– I know people talk about the hot seat, but in reality it's not that hot. It can be lonely sometimes to sit there, but I have talented and good people around me, and that means everything, he says.
