VIVIAN MOTZFELDT ON NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE USA:

- We are on the same track about Greenland

But it is too early to say whether Greenland and Denmark are on track for an agreement with the US, says Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs.

- We must find a solution. We must not forget that there are many good people in the USA. We must not forget that NATO is also the USA. Greenland has said time and again that Greenland wants much greater cooperation with the USA. This is what Vivian Motzfeldt says about the work in the working group between Greenland/Denmark and the USA.

Vivian Motzfeldt doesn't hesitate long before answering the question:

How far have Greenland and Denmark reached in the negotiations with the United States and in the diplomatic marathon over Greenland to defend the kingdom against Donald Trump's threats to take over Greenland:

- The first meeting between high-level officials in a working group has taken place in a good atmosphere.

- I will not go into detail about how the discussion in the working group has been. The parties say that they are on the same track and would like to meet again soon.

- Whether we are on track for an agreement with the US, it is too early to say.

- We already have the Igaliku Agreement from 2004, which is based on an agreement from 1951.

This is what Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs and Research says in an interview with Sermitsiaq at the Arctic conference Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø, Norway.

The four-day conference started on Monday, February 2nd.

Must have peace of mind

Vivian Motzfeldt states that the working group must have peace of mind.

This aligns her with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who has said that the working group should continue its work without too much media attention each time the group meets.

About the negotiations in the working group between Denmark/Greenland and the USA, Vivian Motzfeldt says further:

- We don't want to talk to each other through the media.

- Although there is a lot of noise around us, it is very important to focus on the work of the working group, which held its meeting at the end of January in Washington, USA.

- It is really promising that the working group started so quickly after my meeting with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen on January 14 (with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J. D. Vance, ed.), she says.

From Greenland, Head of Department Mininnguaq Kleist, Greenland's Head of Representation Jacob Isbosethsen and Deputy Head Rebecca Lynge at the Greenland Representation in Washington participated in the meeting of the special working group. It is intended to strengthen security in the Arctic.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen has said that the agreement in Washington on January 14 was that the parties should have a constructive dialogue that should both meet American security interests and respect the kingdom's red lines, which are the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the kingdom, and the self-determination of the Greenlandic people.

Security in the Arctic

Vivian Motzfeldt was one of the international keynote speakers in the panel debate "Arctic State of Affairs" at Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø on Tuesday.

A number of prominent politicians, officials, researchers and experts from around the world have discussed security in the Arctic at the Arctic Conference.

It is a theme that has never been more topical than now. Much because of the United States, whose President Donald Trump has threatened to take over Greenland. But also because of a more aggressive Russia, which has been waging war against Ukraine for several years.

In addition to Motzfeldt, Norway's Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide, EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas and Canadian Governor General and former ICC President Mary Simon participated in Tuesday's panel debate "Arctic State of Affairs" at the Tromsø conference.

Thank you for strong support from the EU

Naalakkersuisoq held a press conference after the panel debate. Here, Vivian Motzfeldt said that Greenland and Greenland's partners in the EU have for some time been feeling pressure (from the USA ed.).

She thanked for the strong support for Greenland from Denmark, the other Nordic countries, the rest of the EU countries and the European Union, EU.

The governments of Greenland and Denmark, led by the Chairman of Naalakkersuisoq, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, have become world-famous for daring to speak out against US President Donald Trump.

Vivian Motzfeldt, do you feel that you, including yourself, have really stepped out of the box and are in international focus?

- I understand that, because the whole world was looking at us that day, January 19th, she says.

Do you think you will get a good deal with the US?

- Yes. We need to find a solution. We shouldn't forget that there are a lot of good people in the USA. We also shouldn't forget that NATO is also the USA. Greenland has repeatedly said that Greenland wants much greater cooperation with the USA, she says.

How have you dealt with Trump and the US's threats to take over Greenland?

- It is a rhetoric that we have not heard before from one of the allies. The USA has been a friend for many years. I am the kind of person who focuses very much on finding a solution in the end. If you are not on that path, it is very, very difficult, states Vivian Motzfeldt.
