There continues to be a great deal of international focus on the Arctic. More than 1,100 participants, led by international politicians, will gather in Tromsø, Norway, next week for the Arctic conference Arctic Frontiers 2026.
It takes place from Monday, February 2 to Thursday, February 5. On Tuesday, February 3, the conference opens with a panel debate, Arctic State of Affairs.
Among the main names here are central political actors such as Greenland's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Research, Vivian Motzfeldt, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, Norway, EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas and Canadian Governor General and former ICC President Mary Simon.
120 journalists accredited
International media interest is high. More than 120 journalists from 17 countries are accredited to Arctic Frontiers.
The conference in Tromsø will also be attended by ministers from, among others, Great Britain, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, as well as members of parliament from Finland and Sweden.
At the conference, government leaders, politicians, diplomats, business people, representatives of indigenous peoples and journalists will meet in Tromsø, located 320 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, for discussions and debates about the future of the Arctic.
Vivian Motzfeldt is participating in the Tromsø conference in the wake of the massive pressure that US President Donald Trump has put on both Greenland and the rest of the Kingdom for a few weeks in January, when the president sharpened his rhetoric that the US should own Greenland.
The conflict has been de-escalated for the time being, as a framework has been agreed for further negotiations between, among others, the USA and Greenland/Denmark on the security situation in the Arctic.
In a press release from Arctic Frontiers, the conference is described as a “high-level conference that will take the temperature in an Arctic that is close to boiling point.”
From Greenland, in addition to Vivian Motzfeldt, the Head of Department Inuuteq Holm Olsen from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Research will participate. From the Danish Parliament, the IA member of parliament Aaja Chemnitz will participate, among others.
Arctic Frontiers is one of the leading international conferences and meeting places focusing on Arctic issues. The conference, which started in 2007, is held every January/February in Tromsø.
