- The most important message we have given to the US is that international laws and borders must be respected. We have also stated that we are open to cooperation and that we are well aware that Greenland's geopolitical location brings great responsibility, says Vivian Motzfeldt during an interview with Sermitsiaq right after the press conference with Lars Løkke Rasmussen in Washington.
Vivian Motzfeldt and Lars Løkke Rasmussen met today with Vice President J.D. Vance and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding President Donald Trump's repeated pressure to take over Greenland.
Naalakkersuisoq for Foreign Affairs emphasizes that she has also used the opportunity to make the meeting participants understand that this pressure creates insecurity in society.
- At the meeting, where I as a Greenlander participate, I emphasized that as a Greenlander, and since I came from Greenland, I also placed great importance on the feelings we experience in this country, and the increasing pressure that we have experienced over the course of a year, which has created fear and uncertainty in the population. And our allies must understand that, she says.
Geopolitical responsibility is taken seriously
Vivian Motzfeldt says that Greenland, Denmark and the US did not reach an agreement during the meeting today. Despite disagreements, a proposal has been made that all countries can agree to:
- Although no solution has of course been found today, it does provide a small push forward and hope. I cannot say at this time how the working group will work, but I can say that work will be done to find solutions that everyone can live with. Although it is difficult, it indicates that there is a willingness to listen to us, says Vivian Motzfeldt.
She reiterates that Greenland is interested in closer cooperation with the Western world and explains that she has contradicted the US claim about Chinese and Russian presence in Greenland.
- We have determined at the meeting that we are not allies with China or Russia and that there are no investments in Greenland from China.
At the same time, Vivian Motzfeldt emphasized during the meeting that Greenland not only takes, but also gives in terms of security policy interests:
- An American presence already exists in Greenland in the form of Pituffik. This proves that Greenland is willing to make room for allies when it comes to security in the Western world, says Vivian Motzfeldt.
