With only a few weeks until the start of the competition on April 2-3, the organizing group behind the snowmobile event "Greenland Hill Climb Championship" is pulling the plug and canceling.

There is simply not enough snow in the gorge at Quassussuaq, where the event was supposed to take place.

There is not enough snow in the mountains to drive snowmobiles this year.

Until the very end, the organizers had hoped that a decent pile of snow would fall, but that has not happened, and ultimately it is about the safety of the riders, says spokesperson for the organizing group, Larseeraq Egede.

– There is not enough snow in the area. At the bottom there is a risk that the riders will hit rocks and they also have to go all the way to the top, where the wind removes the snow that is there. Even last year when there was a lot of snow, we had to spend a week moving around the snow and preparing the course, says Larseeraq Egede.

Inspiration from the USA

Last year was the first time that the Greenland HIll Climb Championship was held in Greenland, inspired by the American competition "Jackson Hole Snow Devils Hill Climb", which was started in 1975 in Wyoming, and which today brings together more than 300 of the best snowmobile riders from both Canada and the USA.

Last year's competition involved racing for the fastest time from the lake to the top of the mountain around the gates set up for both adults and children. This year the plan was for the competition to be expanded with an old boys race and a women's class.

The organizing group had hoped that the snow would fall, but with less than a month to go, things are not looking too good. – It is such a shame that we have to cancel this year. It is a completely new sport that enjoys great support from both sponsors, volunteers and the audience, says Larseeraq Egede on behalf of the organizing group.

Enjoys great support

In terms of sponsorship, the organizers already had a good start last year with Greenland Boat Center/Orsiivik as the main sponsor with a contribution of 50,000 kroner.

In addition, they received contributions and sponsorships from Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq, GNC, HHE, ITTU.NET, Nuuk Transport, Bolt Lamar, Nuuk Handymand Aps, Arctic Auto and Detailing, Qiviut, Sarfalerisut and VVS, Bifrost Motors, Permagreen, Autonord, Grønlands Kontorforsyning, Arctic Star, Nuuk Rental, Nuna Advokater, Inuk Travel, Royal Arctic Line, Nuuk Marine Center, Wrap Skilte Service, Raw Arctic and Qulutius Events.

Max Madsen from Sisimiut had the fastest time last year and thus won the competition. However, he will have to wait another year to defend the title.

– It is such a shame that we have to cancel this year. It is a completely new sport that enjoys great support from both sponsors, volunteers and the audience. We have gathered a good group of volunteers who are happy to take on responsibility and want to put energy and effort into this, says Larseeraq Egede and adds:

– But we just have to come back strong next year.
