Self-governing Sikuki Nuuk Harbour has completed a tender process with several contractors who were interested in being responsible for a major port expansion in Nuuk.
The company states in a press release that the winning bid was submitted by KJ Greenland A/S, and that the parties are now meeting to enter into the contract.
The project involves a total of 350 meters of quay divided into 200 meters of trawler terminal and 150 meters of dual-use naval quay.
The port must be expanded because tasks such as commercial shipping, trawler unloading, cruise traffic, naval activity and supply tasks have in recent years placed increasing pressure on the existing port.
Director pleased with agreement
Managing Director of Sikuki Nuuk Harbour, John Rasmussen, is pleased that it has been possible to reach an agreement with the Greenlandic contractor:
- We are very pleased with the result of the tender and to be able to award the task to KJ Greenland A/S. With a strong bid, we have a solid basis for realizing a port expansion that is both necessary and future-proof, says John Rasmussen and continues:
- The expansion will benefit the port's many users through better capacity, greater flexibility and better frameworks for both business, fishing, supply and emergency response.
Agreement on naval quay signed with the defense
Back in 2024, Sikuki Nuuk Harbour had to cancel a tender for the expansion of the container terminal because all bids were over budget.
Since then, the company has continued to work on the project, and there have also been developments in the defense sector, which means that 150 meters of naval quay have now been included in the project.
Regarding the naval quay, Sikuki Nuuk Harbour has entered into an agreement with the Danish Defense for priority access for its ships.
The port expansion is expected to be completed in November 2028.
