The call follows a day of intense diplomatic activity. On January 14, Greenland's Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt (Siumut) and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (Moderates) participated in meetings in the United States with, among others, the Vice President and the Foreign Minister.
Later that evening – on January 14 – the Vice-President of Naalakkersuisut, Múte Bourup Egede (Inuit Ataqatigiit), held a press conference, where Naalakkersuisut made it clear that steps have now been taken to conduct the dialogue through more orderly and diplomatic channels – and away from statements through media and social platforms.
– It is a step in the right direction that the dialogue is now conducted through orderly and diplomatic channels – and not only through media and social platforms, said Deputy Chairman of the Government of Greenland, Múte Bourup Egede, at the press conference on January 14.
Fundamental disagreement
At the same time, it was emphasized that there is still a fundamental disagreement between Greenland, Denmark and the USA about the starting point and which direction should be the right one.
– Although the dialogue has now started, we must also emphasize that there is still no fundamental agreement. The disagreement is real, and the situation remains serious, said Múte Bourup Egede.
It is precisely this fundamental disagreement that, according to the party chairmen, makes it necessary for Inatsisartut to gather and discuss the situation politically.
– When we talk about unity, it's not just about words. It's about us all having to contribute to finding a common position, said Múte Bourup Egede., said Múte Bourup Egede.
The Presidency has not yet taken a position
The Inatsisartut presidency has not yet considered the request to bring the meeting forward, according to the Inatsisartut chairman's secretariat, which is therefore unable to comment on the request.
For now, the Inatsisartut meeting is still scheduled to begin on February 3. The Presidency has not yet announced whether the meeting will be brought forward, and no agenda items have yet been announced where time is allocated for a discussion of the current situation.
Inatsisartut to discuss the course
Although the Greenland Government handles foreign policy and dialogue with other countries on a daily basis, in the current situation there is a need for the Greenlandic Parliament to come together and discuss the overall guidelines. The goal is to ensure a common political direction for Greenland's next steps, so that the country can stand united externally.
– We need Inatsisartut to discuss the situation and help find a common direction. In the situation we are in, it is important that Greenland can stand united externally, said Múte Bourup Egede.
In a joint statement, the party chairmen have emphasized that Greenland is governed on the basis of the Self-Government Act and international law, and that both Naalakkersuisut and Inatsisartut are elected by the citizens of Greenland.
At the same time, they state that the future of Greenland must be determined by the Greenlandic people – and that this work must be done in dialogue with the population and based on international laws and the Self-Government Act. They emphasize that no other country can interfere in this process, and that Greenland itself must be able to make decisions about its future without pressure, delay or interference.
