A proposal to release a new muskox population in the northern municipality has already been approved by the Committee for Fisheries and Hunting and the Finance Committee in Avannaata Municipality. On February 13, the entire municipal council will then decide on the proposal.
- It is already known that muskox populations tend to grow quickly, which there is experience in this, as approximately 30 muskox were released in Sigguk (Svartenhuk) at Arfertuarsuk in 1989, and the population here has since grown significantly and contributes to the local meat supply, according to the case presentation.
If the proposal receives the necessary support, the municipality will approach the Self-Government with a view to examining the possibilities in more detail.
During the processing of the proposal in the Committee for Fisheries and Hunting, it was pointed out that the fishermen should be ensured safe access and that this matter should be examined. In the Economic Committee, the coalition, Siumut and Naleraq, expressed a desire for a count of musk oxen to be carried out in Naternaq and Sigguk.
The subject will be brought up at the extraordinary meeting of the municipal council on 13 February.
