Naaja makes demands: More police for Sisimiut

Where crime is increasing, police efforts must be strengthened. And action must be taken now, is a demand that Naalakkersuisoq for the justice sector Naaja H. Nathanielsen has made to the Ministry of Justice.

- Reporting a case can be delicate and difficult, and it requires trust that your report will be treated seriously and quickly, says Naaja H. Nathanielsen

The report on crime developments in Greenland in 2025, which the Greenland Police recently published, according to Naalakkersuisoq for the justice sector, Naaja H. Nathanielsen, gives cause for concern in several areas.

- If citizens are to have trust in the police, it is essential that reports are investigated in a timely manner and with the thoroughness that the cases require, this is stated in a press release that Naaja H. Nathanielsen is behind.

Factual facts

She points to the following factual facts in the police's annual report:

- In the opinion of Naalakkersuisut, the figures point towards that there is a need for increased local presence and a greater prioritization of resources for investigation, it says.

According to Naaja H. Nathanielsen, it is obvious that "Sisimiut in particular has had a very large increase in the number of reports, without this having triggered an increase in staff" at the police station. At the same time, she reiterates the desire to establish a police station in Kangaatsiaq, which the Ministry of Justice has previously rejected.

Request reiterated

- The Greenland Government has therefore recently reiterated its desire for a police station in Kangaatsiaq and has also written to the Ministry of Justice stating that there is an immediate need for a permanent upgrade of the police station in Sisimiut, which must initially be solved with additional staffing, it is reported.

Naaja H. Nathanielsen acknowledges that a multi-year agreement has been entered into for the police, in which an upgrade of 31 full-time equivalents will be made in this country.

- But I must also insist on behalf of the Greenland Government that the number of cases dismissed falls, especially cases dismissed due to the statute of limitations. And it is necessary that a rapid upgrade takes place in places where crime is increasing. It is no use waiting for an upgrade to await a settlement agreement. This must be done on the basis of the identified need, emphasizes Naaja H. Nathanielsen and adds:

It is about trust

- The need in Sisimiut is clearly documented. But Sisimiut is not the only place where an increased local presence is required and in demand. Reporting a case can be delicate and difficult, and it requires trust that one's report will be treated seriously and quickly. I therefore look forward to the implementation of the settlement agreement, but also to steps being taken in the short term towards ensuring sufficient local physical presence and availability of police.
