Múte B. Egede (IA) will become the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Industry and Raw Materials, taking over two important positions from Vivian Motzfeldt and Naaja Nathanielsen respectively.
He points out that the Government of Greenland must continue to work on the good foundation that Vivian Motzfeldt has created:
- A good foundation has been laid for the work that I will continue. We are in an exciting time, where there is a lot of pressure from outside. But we must also remember that it also provides some new opportunities for the country that we have not had before. We must also focus on that, Múte B. Egede tells Sermitsiaq.
- Areas are interconnected
Múte B. Egede previously held the position of Minister of Finance and Taxes, and he says without hesitation that he can handle the three new heavy posts at once.
He explains that the three areas of responsibility are interconnected.
- Foreign and security policy matters are also about raw materials and business opportunities as well as cooperation opportunities.
- Every time you are out as Minister of Foreign Affairs, you also discuss topics such as raw materials and business, he says.
Clear first priority
However, he is clear about what he will prioritize in his new areas of responsibility.
- The most important thing is to hold firm. The most important task of Naalakkersuisut, under the pressure we are under, is that we must make it clear that we retain our right to self-determination for our country.
- At the same time, we must work to create opportunities with the potentials we have, says Múte B. Egede.
As Naalakkersuisut for Foreign Affairs, Múte B. Egede must continue the negotiations with the USA, which were initiated and agreed upon with the Americans under Vivian Motzfeldt.
The negotiations must, among other things, clarify the Americans' wishes for a possible larger military presence in Greenland.
