At Nuummi Eqaarsaartartut – Nuuk Gymnastics, children from the years 2020 to 2024 gather for a festive end to the year, where movement, play and community are in focus. The Christmas end for the little ones offers a wonderful mix of fun activities and the warm traditions of Christmas. It is a day where both children and adults can experience the joy of being together – and at the same time get plenty of energy to move forward during the Christmas season.
A celebration for the little ones
A celebration for the little ones
The Christmas party is for the youngest members of Nuuk Gymnastics, the preschoolers who are not yet in school. The chairman of Nuuk Gymnastics, Line Poulsen, says that the Christmas party is about much more than just celebrations and activities. It is a day that brings the whole family together – both children and parents.
- The Christmas party with a Christmas tree, Santa Claus and a goodie bag is for all our preschoolers. Our members who go to school would rather have regular training sprinkled with a little Christmas spirit, says Line.
In addition to being a fun and festive end to the year, the Christmas party also has an important social significance for both the children and their families. Line Poulsen emphasizes that the Christmas party provides an opportunity to strengthen community across age groups.
- Our association is holding a Christmas party and Shrove Tuesday for the little ones. This gives us the opportunity to combine gymnastics with community among all members, and that unity is important to us, says Line.
Last year, Nuuk Gymnastics had to hold the Christmas party in small groups due to limited space in the USK gym. That is why it is extra special to be able to gather everyone for a big party this year in the hall at Atuarfik Hans Lynge. It is clear that both young and old are participating in the festivities with great enthusiasm. The children are wearing Santa hats, Christmas sweaters and bright smiles, while several parents have gone all in with festive outfits and matching Christmas accessories. One of the many little ones who have their mother and father with them in their beautiful, matching Christmas sweaters is 3-year-old Victoria. With a big smile on her face, the little happy girl says:
- Christmas Eve is just the best.
Santa Claus makes a magical entrance
Of course, Santa Claus is part of the Christmas celebration, and it is a big event for both children and adults. Whether it is really the real Santa Claus, remains a Christmas mystery, but one thing is certain: the smiling and hopeful children around the hall can only mean one thing – Christmas has come to Nuuk Gymnastik.
- We can reveal so much that Santa Claus has put Nuuk Gymnastics on his calendar in December. Whether it is the real Santa Claus, the children will have to decide for themselves, says Line and smiles before continuing.
"We call on Santa Claus together, and he usually hears us. In the first meeting between Santa Claus and the children, the magic is usually electric," she says.
And Line is right. After a few laps around the Christmas tree, the children call out loudly for Santa Claus, and after three tries he hears them. He enters the door – in red and white. The children cheer, stare, and some run into his arms, while others look up in amazement. It is a magical moment that emphasizes that Christmas is very special for the little ones. Santa Claus and his wonderful helper-elf instructors hand out goodie bags to the little gymnasts, and the hall is filled with children who are smiling and energetically enjoying their Christmas foam, fig sticks and tangerines. The parents laugh and talk to their children, while the Christmas joy spreads like a warm, familiar feeling throughout the hall.
Joy of movement gives lasting memories
For Nuuk Gymnastics, the joy of movement is something that extends far beyond the Christmas season. It is about creating an environment where children not only get exercise, but also strengthen their well-being and self-confidence.
- For us at Nuummi Eqaarsaartartut – Nuuk Gymnastics, the joy of movement is about much more than exercise. It is a way to strengthen children's well-being, community and self-confidence. We want to create a framework where children can experience that gymnastics and movement are fun and meaningful, and where they can also make good memories with others. In this way, the joy of movement becomes a gift that extends far beyond Christmas, says the chairman.
And what do you hope the children will get out of the Christmas party? The answer from Line Poulsen is clear.
- Good memories and extra Christmas spirit. Your beloved gym seasoned with Christmas – what more could you want, laughs the chairman.
A community with joy
For Nuuk Gymnastics, the Christmas party is not just about celebrating Christmas – it is also about creating a strong community where the children see both each other and their coaches as role models.
- We are proud of the community we build in the association. The families of the children meet at various points, and the children see our assistant coaches as good role models. Gymnastics with us is more than training – it is community, role models and joy, says Line Poulsen.
Although the Christmas party at Nuuk Gymnastics offers fun activities and festive celebrations, it is the community and the joy of movement that sets the frame for this magical day. It is a day when the first steps towards an active lifestyle may be taken – in the moment when a child looks up with wide, wondering eyes at the man with the white beard, while his father gently holds his hand. It is here, in the glittering Christmas season, that dreams and possibilities meet, and the children begin to understand that the joy of moving and being part of a community is something that can last far beyond this magical December day. A gift that lasts well into the new year.
