Prosecutor appeals attempted murder conviction

The last word has not been said in the case of a 24-year-old man who was convicted of attempted murder and rape in Qaqortoq on January 29.

– The case has been appealed to the Greenland High Court with a request for an increase in sentence, informs prosecutor Line Pedersen.

The Kujalleq District Court found that the man was guilty, but also insane and thus unfit for a regular sentence with serving time in a prison.

The court then sentenced the man to psychiatric treatment. However, the prosecutor wanted the man to be placed in a detention center.

Difference in measures

Here we are talking about two different measures that can be imposed on mentally ill criminals, and the district court chose the milder of them.

A detention sentence would make it more difficult for the convicted man to be discharged from the hospital in Denmark, where he is currently being held. In such cases, the court first has to make a new decision to change the person's sentence.

The 24-year-old man has, among other things, delusions of communicating with good and evil spirits and is considered to be schizophrenic.

He pleaded not guilty in the district court, but did not want to appeal the sentence himself. Now his case is coming before the High Court anyway due to the appeal from the prosecution.
