A recent opinion poll sheds new light on the population's relationship with the royal family. According to the poll, the royal family is most important to the older part of the population.
The poll is based on 610 Greenlandic respondents and was conducted by election analyst Sune Steffen Hansen from Copenhagen Post, with Opinion Danmark A/S as data supplier.
If we start by looking at what citizens in the 18-34 age group have answered, 18 percent say that the royal family is very important to them, personally.
14 percent of the same age group think that the royal family is not important to them, personally.
Analyst: Efforts are needed to increase popularity
The figures are significantly different for the older participants over 65 years of age in the survey. Here, 53 percent think that the royal family has a high importance to them.
Only 9 percent of those over 65 answer that the royal family has no importance to them on a personal level.
- The younger generations have a weaker emotional bond with the royal family. This means that a more active effort must be made if the Royal House is to continue to be popular among the next generation of Greenlanders, says Sune Steffen Hansen about the results of the survey.
The figures therefore generally show less interest in the royal family in the younger age group.
There is a 35 percentage point difference between those who think the royal family has a high importance, in the two age groups, with the older ones holding the royal family closer to their hearts.
The King plans to visit Greenland from 18 February 2026.
